חשוב לוודא מראש שחברת התעופה מאפשרת הטסת חיות מחמד, לבדוק באילו תנאים – תא נוסעים, תא מטען או טיסה פרטית – ולהתאים את הכלוב לדרישות המחמירות של החברות .
תיאום עם חברת התעופה והכנת הכלוב
יש להנפיק תעודת בריאות וטרינרית רשמית – תהליך שנעשה מול משרד החקלאות, לרוב עד 10 ימים לפני הטיסה. בכמה מדינות, יש צורך גם בטיפול מונע נגד טפילים כ-48 שעות לפני העלייה למטוס.

ביום הטיסה חשוב להגיע מוקדם, עם כל המסמכים, ולוודא שחיית המחמד מוכנה לנסיעה – מבחינת אוכל, שתייה, והרגעה אם צריך. אפשר להוסיף תג זיהוי נוסף על הכלוב ולוודא שמספרי הטלפון מעודכנים.
